Described as both “humbling” and “enchanting” this ancient red cedar is located on Meares Island, off the coast of Tofino, BC. It has a circumference of 18.3 meters (60 feet), a height of 42.7 meters (140 feet) and was once considered the largest of its kind in Canada. Enveloped in both flora and fauna, this tree is a living ecosystem.

After the tree’s discovery in 1984, a trail was built, making the tree and the forest that surrounds it, accessible to thousands of visitors each year. On Big Tree Trail you can find a number of western red cedars of truly impressive proportions. Explore your way through the fern carpeted forest and take time to appreciate some of the largest and oldest life forms on this precious planet.
